The Zoya Factor 2019 Movie Review

Zoya Solanki (Sonam Kapoor) is considered lucky for cricket by her ex-army officer father (Sanjay Kapoor) as she was born on the day India won the cricket world cup for the first time in ’83. A turn of events makes her come in contact with the current Indian team, who also begin to think of her as a lucky mascot. The only one against her is the team’s captain Nikhil Khoda (Dulquer Salmaan) who believes it’s hard work and team spirit and not some good luck charm that wins matches. A twist in the tale comes when both fall for each other, leading to complications. Whether their love survives Zoya’s X-factor forms the crux of the film.

India is a cricket crazy nation and superstition goes a long way when it comes to the game. We all know someone whom we consider as a jinx for the Indian cricket team and bar him or her from watching crucial matches. We wear our favourite clothes, fast for the team and even hold our pee if a batsman is nearing a century. Likewise, the Indian cricketers have been known to follow certain practices they consider lucky. Like they’d choose a particular bat to play with or wear a lucky handkerchief around their necks, or play with their collar turned upwards. The team members sit in positions they consider lucky. We have all grown up on such stories and that’s the focal point of the film.

The Zoya Factor 2019 Movie Reviews

It’s a satire on both the superstition surrounding cricket in particular and our overall obsession with horoscopes, good luck charms and remedies and other related practices in general. You’ll find yourself laughing at your own foibles.
The Zoya Factor Movie is written in such a way that famous instances related to cricket, where our team miraculously won matches, will come to mind. The actors forming the playing eleven will remind you of past and present cricketing stars. So be ready for lots of nostalgia-laden moments when the sporting action takes place. The cricket sequences have been shot well and give you an actual feel of the game.

The dialogue is extremely witty and keeps you laughing throughout. And the absurdity of how we let superstition shape us will make you laugh even more. Sonam Kapoor’s character is that of a girl having low esteem. She considers herself a loser. And hence she finds the idea of being the cricket team’s lucky charm attractive. Sonam has done ample justice to both aspects of her character’s personality. There’s an extremely funny scene involving her and Anil Kapoor playing a superstar that’s a must-watch. She has good chemistry going with Dulquer. Their romance has a fresh appeal to it and doesn’t look staged.

Dulquer Salmaan has again proved that he’s one of our finest actors around. He lets his eyes, his expressions convey the emotions and doesn’t just rely on the dialogue. The angst he feels as Zoya begins to get credit for the team’s win or his hurt at being estranged from her seems real. He gives off the vibe of being the captain of India’s cricket team. The hostility between him and Angad Bedi’s character is palpable. Angad too has done a fine job of portraying a selfish cricketer more interested in his own betterment than his team’s.

The Zoya Factor 2019 Verdict

Our only grouse from the film is that it’s too full of product placements and portions of it feel like showreels for several popular brands. Leaving this aspect aside, this well-written and the well-acted The Zoya Factor Movie is a paisa vasool rom-com. It’ll certainly make you laugh at yourself.
