Shamshera (transl. Sword) is an upcoming 2020 Indian action-adventure film starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, and Vaani Kapoor. It is produced by Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films. Principal photography of the film began on 1 December 2018. The film will release on July 31, 2020, in IMAX theaters, coinciding with the Bakrid holiday weekend. Following Ranbir Kapoor’s casting announcement along with that of the film on 6 May 2018, Sanjay Dutt was confirmed to be the main villain of the film, and his casting was announced on 10 May. Four days later, Vaani Kapoor’s casting was announced, set to play a “desirable and sought-after traveling performer from the Indian heartland.” On 4 December 2018, several days after filming had commenced, Ronit Roy announced his casting on his Twitter page.

A massive fort for the film was built at Film City, Goregaon, requiring two months of preparation and the effort of nearly 300 workers. On 6 May 2018, Yash Raj Films released a 45-second teaser video, announcing the film and its casting of Ranbir Kapoor as the film’s eponymous lead character. The following day, director Karan Mahotra released the first-look poster on Twitter. On 3 July, the producers announced the official release date of the film as 31 July 2020. In January 2019, it was confirmed that Ranbir Kapoor will be playing a double role-Shamshera and his father for the first time in his career.

Explaining his decision about casting Dutt as the villain, filmmaker Karan Malhotra said, “Shamshera is a highly ferocious and fearless character in the film. Therefore his nemesis, the villain had to be even more fierce and monumental in every aspect. Who’s better than Sanjay Sir to give us that impact on screen.”
